Recognize Perspectives

Trip to Heifer InternationalDuring our freshman year we had the opportunity to visit the Heifer International Ranch in Arkansas where we simulated living in conditions of hunger and poverty. This trip allowed us to recognize perspectives in that we were taken out of our comfy lives and were able to get a better understanding of how many people on earth feel every day. Going through a simulation is very different than just hearing about the effects of poverty, because you are standing in a little sliver of their shoes. This experience opened up my eyes to what others around the world face, helping me to recognize their perspectives and become a more informed global citizen. The next step is using this knowledge and experience to impact the world, especially the lives of those who do face hunger and poverty.

Identifying Prejudice in To Kill a MockingbirdBy reading To Kill a Mockingbird and identifying prejudice in the story, I was recognizing perspectives. The perspectives of people who are exhibiting racism and attitudes of superiority in To Kill a Mockingbird are not good perspectives, but it is necessary to be able to recognize them in order to help fight against these injustices. It is important that we recognize all kinds of different perspectives, even if we do not agree with everything that a person believes, so that we can truly interact with others.
